MOOVIE REVIEW : WALL-E (2008 - English)

Not much was revealed during the teasers shown on Wall-E for the past few months before its release. All we know is there is this mild-natured robot that seems pretty adorable called Wall-E. We also know that it was directed by Andrew Stanton, who brought us Finding Nemo, so that's a plus point.

The story starts off with a lonely and dilapidated earth, left to rot in ruins and pollution. Wall-E, the last surviving robot, built to clean up the pollution, goes on with his daily regimented life, continue doing what he was built to do. His loneliness ends one fine day when the earth was visited by EVE, a more sophisticated robot sent to earth for an important mission. Both robots, each passionate about what it was built to do and serve, ultimately meet and beautifully learns a new meaning to their existence, together.

I thought it was a rather beautiful story told in an animated film. The theme was in fact nothing like the other usual animations we see, Wall-E uses a more serious approach with a more meaningful message. Earth is dying, humankind is near extinction, but yet the persistent passion of this robot makes us see two things, protecting the earth and reviving love in humankind. Apart from that, it still manages to give us some funny moments, a few romantic love scenes and a touching ending.

MOVIE REVIEW : EVENING (2007 - English)

Category : Drama, Romance, International Screens / Starring : Claire Danes, Vanessa Redgrave, Toni Collette, Patrick Wilson, Hugh Dancy, Mamie Gummer, Natasha Richardson, Eileen Atkins, Meryl Streep, Glenn Close

The cast says it all. With powerhouse acting from Glenn Close & Meryl Streep, we also have Toni Collete (Academy Award & Golden Globe Award nominee, best known for her performances in Muriel's Wedding & Little Miss Sunshine), Claire Danes (Golden Globe Award winner for her performance in the TV series My So-Called Life) and Vanessa Redgrave (two-time Golden Globe and Emmy Award winner, among some of her better known roles include in movies like If These Walls Could Talk 2, Atonement and The Gathering Storm).

A must watch just looking the the list of cast. Of course we would already expect a heavy drama here (so for those who can't take heavy drama, please refrain from watching). Streep and Close are just lending their superb acting as modest supporting roles, yet able to get some emotions shaking; especially with the amazing break-down scene by Close, I'd just have to say, wow.

One plesant surprise that came along in this movie is English actor Hugh Dancy. I can merely remember him from Blood And Chocolate, but I had to say, he gave a rather impressive performance in this movie. Claire Danes is one of those that manage to constantly captivate audience with her act, although having quite a restricted versatility in her roles taken. She continues to take on the usual pleasant and innocent role in Evening.

OK, I'm going on and on about the casts, as I sincerely believe it was the movie's basic strength. Story wise, perhaps slow paced, heavy dramas like this should be left to watch on your own, to really appreciate it. Basically the movie shows the present and the flash-back of the life of Ann Grant (Redgrave the older and Danes the younger), where we were told how she accidentally falls for a man called Harris (Wilson) from a wedding of her best friend Lila (Gummer), which later changes the path of the lives around her, and most importantly, her own.

Nigel Lythgoe Leaves American Idol

Nigel Lythgoe has been the mastermind behind the successful reality program American Idol. Just as the eighth season kicked off in July 2008, he announced his leaving from the show, much to the dismay of Fox family. The show was just about to begin, and they needed all they can get to boost the program back as its viewers have dropped between 2007 and 2008. While there is still no word yet on who will replace Lythgoe's place, the judges Simon, Paula and Randy have started off season 8's audition in San Francisco on the July 17.

Will the show still be as successful without Lythgoe, we'll just have to wait and see.

Festival Filem Malaysia Ke-21_Opening Act

The local movie awards Festival Filem Malaysia ke-21 (FFM) was held on the 9th August 2008 at PICC, Putrajaya. Mamat Khalid held the biggest smile as his black & white movie titled Kala Malam Bulan Mengambang made it as the biggest winner that night, bagging 5 awards.

Mamat Khalid won Pengarah Terbaik while his movie took home the Filem Terbaik award. Rosyam Nor from the same movie also won Pelakon Lelaki Terbaik. Maya Karin on the other hand was the Pelakon Wanita Terbaik, for her performance in Othman Ali's Anak Halal.

Hans Isaac, actor turned director was another big winner, who took home Pengarah Harapan and Lakon Layar Terbaik awards, for his works in the movie Cuci.

Young talent Erynne Erynna who made quite an impression with her performance in the horror flick Congkak won Pelakon Kanak-Kanak Terbaik. Suhaimi Baba was one of them who was awarded Anugerah Khas Juri, while her movie 1957 Hati Malaya's music bagged the Skor Muzik Asal Terbaik (Sharon Paul) and Lagu Tema Asal Terbaik (sung by Siti Nurhaliza) awards.

MOOVIE REVIEW : SUSUK (2008 - Malay)

Category : Horror, Thriller / Starring : Ida Nerina, Diana Rafaer, Adlin Aman Ramli, Sofia Jane, Aleeza Kassim, Hairie Othman

Believe it or not this is supposed to be a 2006 movie, but only arrived in our cinemas in 2008. Directed by Naeim Ghalili & Amir Muhammad, the movie tells the story about SUSUK, 'the forbidden practice of inserting and embedding foreign objects such as gold, silver, and diamonds under a person's skin in order to increase the person's allure'. Quite an impressive set of casts, but I went in watching without any expectations.

I was rather happy with Sofia Jane's acting, despite she wasn't really the main role, she still managed to steal some lime-light. Her portrayal of the bitchy diva was quite natural and impressive. Diana Rafar plays an innocent nurse who aspires to be a successful singer and when she is exposed to the real world of entertainment where beauty and youth are expensive possesions to keep and compete, she soon falls into the vicious tradition of turning to black magic for short cuts, namely SUSUK.

Special effects and make up works, not really impressive. The scene with Ida Nerina flying around wearing very fake looking dracula teeth was rather amateurish. Acting wise, Diana I would say is not too bad from what I initally expected from her. Aleeza Kassim, looking rather too tall and plastic, ended up looking more like a transvestite, was not natural enough to be convincing. While the cinematography has improved if we compare this movie to other local movies few years back, it still didn't quite do it for me. Still a mile from achieving what I would categorize as a 'competent' piece of work. And most importantly the twist to the plot, rather unconvincing, as they failed to really tie those knots well towards the end. Many audience left the cinema feeling dazed and rather annoyed with the ending.

RIHANNA - RELOADED, AND GETTING ON STRONGER

Nothing can stand in the way now for uprising teen idol Rihanna. At the age of only 20, Robyn Rihanna Fenty from Barbados has already released three studio albums, the first Gold and the latter two Platinum certification by RIAA; and reaped eight Top 10 hits and three of them number 1 in the US.

Quite an impressive resume for a twenty year old who cites Brandy, Beyonce Knowles, Whitney Houston, Bob Marley and Mariah Carey as the influence in her music. If we look at her music career, she has actually gone through quite a bit of transgression, both in her music and fashion, evolving through changes which keep audience constantly amused and entertained. Take her hairstyle for instance, from the long silky hair during her debut album's release, to the shoking short, spiky boy-cut in Good Girl Gone Bad. My favourite's actually the 3rd from left above. Not sure her recent decision to go curly was a good decision though.

Her music has also moved from reggae to pop, and now to modern hip-hop. She has recently repackaged her third studio album with three new songs, where she gained her latest number 1 hit in both US and UK titled Take A Bow. Her duet with Maroon 5 on the remake of their song If I Never See Your Face Again has peaked at 51 and 28 in US and UK respectively. Her latest single Disturbia is actually quite a great fast track, currently still climbing in the US Billboard, peaking at number 4.

A lot of clever and successful decisions took place in her career, and she seems to be getting better and better. Do I see at least a few more successful albums and a few number 1 hits coming, definitely. This also goes to show that you do not need very good vocals to do it in the music industry, being clever in your decision making, the right packaging, the ability to sell yourself the right way, and being gorgeous like her of course, well you just might stand a chance to do it, like Rihanna.

Jason Mraz_We Sing We Dance We Steal Things

Mraz to me has one of the most beautiful male vocals around. Totally impressed with his single You And I Both, great track, great vocals. Born in 1977, Mraz is an American singer-songwriter with various levels of influence in his music, including pop, rock, folk, jazz, country. To date this is his third studio album. Mraz is not one of those that has done very well in charts, but he certainly has his followers. His other more popular singles include Remedy (I Won't Worry), Curbside Prophet, Geek In The Pink, Wordplay and his most recent single from this album, I'm Yours.

I'm Yours is actually one of the more simple, light-hearted track from this album. Although not a bad song altogether (it's still such a great tune to listen to), there are actually other few great tracks that I would hope to see as singles coming up for Mraz. To start with, Live High carries the similar light hearted approach but definitely a better track. The beautiful ballad A Beautiful Mess (what an awesome name don't you think) is my favourite ballad in this album. He has also collaborated with James Morrison and Colbie Cailat, but their duets are not really impressive comparatively to other tracks. This album also sees Mraz taking on bolder attempts with different tunes like Coyotes, The Dynamo of Violition and Make It Mine. You get a fair share of different genres in Mraz's music and this album is no different. I actually preferred this album to the previous Mr. A-Z
